At a recent SoulCalibur V event, I got the chance to speak with one of the UK’s best professional gamers, Duncan Cartner, aka Hyrul, and he was kind enough to share some tips for players. I’m still in the process of trying to rent Soul Calibur V (c’mon Plurent! Hurry up!), but so far I’ve heard not so great things about it. The story mode is supposedly lackluster, and I don’t understand why it’s gone backwards in terms of quality over the years. But one thing the game does do right is its fantastic character creator that allows you to literally create absolutely.

SoulCalibur V’s roster may be diverse, but its approach to the fighting genre is fairly fundamental, focusing on one-on-one battles in a nondescript 3D environments sprinkled with 2D elements. The ridiculous solo campaign has an outrageous plotline, but chances are you didn’t come for that. This game is an impresario when you’re battling actual human beings and not a frosty CPU.

The brawling breaks down between five main actions: Horizontal and vertical attacks, kicks, blocks and throws.
